Abstract

This study aims to describe the emotional regulation of student athletes, who are often pressured by the demands of sports and academics. In the context of sports, the ability to manage stress, anxiety, and other emotions is essential to maintain athlete performance. This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a survey method to collect data from student-athletes registered for the 2024 ITS Futsal Championship. The sample used was 25 student athletes who met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that the majority of student athletes had moderate emotional regulation abilities, meaning they were able to manage their emotions quite well in competitive situations, but not to an extreme. The two main emotional regulation strategies found were suppression and reappraisal. Suppression is widely used by athletes to deal with competitive pressure. In contrast, reappraisal is more widely used to change the perception of stressful situations, which has been shown to help athletes stay calm and focused. This study underscores the importance of developing more adaptive emotional regulation skills among student athletes, as well as the need for a psychological training approach that considers the balance between short-term and long-term strategies in managing emotional stress. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for designing effective mental training programs to improve the performance and psychological well-being of student athletes.
