Abstract

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent oral health problems among elementary school–aged children. This study aimed to determine the factors influencing the incidence of dental caries among first-grade students at SD Negeri 064983 Medan Helvetia.  This study employed an kuantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population and sample consisted of all first-grade students totaling 73 respondents, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were analyzed using statistical tests to identify associations between variables with Chi Square and Regresi logistic test. The results showed that gender (p < 0.001), consumption of sweet foods (p < 0.001), availability of school dental health facilities (p < 0.001), peer influence (p < 0.001), parental role (p < 0.001), teacher role (p < 0.001), and the role of health workers (p < 0.001) significantly affected the incidence of dental caries. The most dominant factor influencing dental caries was the availability of dental health facilities at school. Data analysis included univariate analysis to describe data distribution, chi-square tests to examine associations between variables, and logistic regression analysis to identify the most dominant factor. In conclusion, gender, sweet food consumption, availability of school dental health facilities, peer influence, parental role, teacher role, and the role of health workers significantly influence the incidence of dental caries. Therefore, improving the availability of dental health facilities at schools and strengthening the roles of parents, teachers, and health workers are essential in preventing dental caries among school-aged children.
