Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) in children remains a serious global health issue, including in Indonesia. The control of tuberculosis depends on treatment success rates and is influenced by various factors, including the stigma associated with the disease. Stigma can lead to feelings of shame, fear of social judgment, and concerns about discrimination, all of which create barriers to treatment. This study aims to provide an overview of parental stigma regarding childhood tuberculosis at community health centers in Bandung City. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design among parents of children with tuberculosis at the Pasir Kaliki, Sukajadi, and Garuda Community Health Center, using accidental sampling to recruit 52 respondents over a one-month data collection period from January to February 2026. Stigma was measured using the Van Rie TB Stigma Scales (VTSS). Data were analyzed univariately using descriptive statistical tests in the form of frequency distribution and percentages tables. The results of this study indicate that the majority of parents exhibit low levels of stigma (55.8%), while nearly half still experience high levels of stigma (44.2%). Domain analysis reveals that most respondents fall into the low-stigma category regarding concerns about disease transmission (65.4%) and disease disclosure (67.3%). However, in the domain of values and attitudes related to feelings of shame, disgrace, and negative judgment, high stigma was observed (51.9%). Therefore, an appropriate intervention approach is needed to reduce stigma in support of successful tuberculosis treatment for children at the primary healthcare level.
