Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease is a global health problem that often leads to various complications, one of which is Restless Legs Syndrome, a neurological sensorimotor disorder commonly found in patients undergoing hemodialysis. This study aimed to describe the severity of Restless Legs Syndrome among patients undergoing hemodialysis for early detection of emergencies. The population in this study consisted of Chronic Kidney Disease patients undergoing hemodialysis at Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Welas Asih. Samples were obtained using purposive sampling, resulting in 143 respondents who experienced symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome. Data were collected using the Indonesian version of the Self-administered Version of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale, which had undergone validity and reliability testing. The instrument demonstrated good face validity (SFI-Ave = 0,978), construct validity with Corrected Item-Total Correlation values ranging from 0,42 to 0,77, and high reliability with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0,893. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to obtain frequency distribution, percentage and mean values for the Restless Legs Syndrome severity. Most respondents were adults (83,2%) and female (60,1%). The majority had undergone hemodialysis for less than 5 years (65,7%), with a frequency of twice per week (98,6%) and had hypertension as a comorbidity (65%). The mean score was 16,17 ± 6,3, indicating that the severity of symptoms was relatively low. However, based on item analysis most respondents reported symptoms at a moderate level across most questionnaire items. Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms in hemodialysis patients were generally mild with minimal impact. However, the assessment and monitoring remained important for early detection and prevention of condition deterioration and patient safety risks.
