Mental health among nursing students is an important issue influenced by various factors, one of which is the experience of losing a loved one. Loss can trigger complex emotional responses and potentially lead to depressive symptoms, especially among young adults who are in a vulnerable developmental stage. This study aimed to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and the experience of losing a close person among nursing students using a scoping review approach. Data were obtained from Scopus, Ebscohost, and Wiley databases with a publication range from 2016 to 2026. The article selection process followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and resulted in 15 relevant studies for analysis. The findings indicate that loss is significantly associated with increased depressive symptoms, particularly in cases of sudden or traumatic loss. Factors such as prolonged grief disorder, emotion regulation, coping mechanisms, and social support play important roles in influencing this relationship. Among nursing students, the risk of depression is higher due to the dual emotional burden of personal loss and clinical exposure to death. In conclusion, the experience of loss is a significant risk factor for depression among nursing students, highlighting the need for comprehensive interventions to support their mental health.
