A breast cancer diagnosis not only has physical consequences but also creates complex psychological stress that affects patients’ mental well-being. Self-acceptance serves as a crucial psychological coping mechanism to help individuals come to terms with their condition and maintain their quality of life. This article aims to comprehensively review the concept, process, influencing factors, and the role of self-acceptance in women with breast cancer based on empirical studies. The method used was a narrative literature review with article searches conducted through the Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases using the keywords “breast cancer,” “self-acceptance,” “acceptance of illness” and “psychological adaptation.” Inclusion criteria included research articles in Indonesian or English, full-text articles, published between 2021 and 2026, and relevant to the topic. A total of 7 articles were analyzed following the selection process. The review results indicate that patients’ levels of self-acceptance vary from low to high, influenced by sociodemographic factors, clinical factors, psychological factors, and other factors such as social support. The process toward self-acceptance is dynamic and gradual, progressing through five stages: non-acceptance, passive acceptance, willingness to accept, behavioral acceptance, and transcendence of acceptance. Good self-acceptance is associated with increased resilience, more adaptive clinical decision-making, and a reduced risk of demoralization syndrome. In conclusion, self-acceptance in breast cancer patients is a dynamic psychological process that develops gradually.
