Abstract

Hospitalization changes a child's life and causes anxiety. Anxiety is an emotional state experienced subjectively and without a specific object if not addressed properly will complicate treatment and affect the child's growth and development. This study aims to determine the level of anxiety in children undergoing hospitalization in the Santa Theresia Room, Santa Elisabeth Hospital, Medan in 2024. The method used in this study is descriptive research with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study were toddlers, preschoolers, school children, and adolescents who underwent hospitalization. The number of samples obtained was 68 respondents with a sampling technique using accidental sampling. The instrument used in this study was the Spence Children Anxiety Scale (Parent Report) to measure the anxiety of toddlers and preschoolers. The results showed that the anxiety of toddlers and preschoolers in the moderate anxiety category was 14 people (40%), mild anxiety 11 people (31.4%) and severe anxiety 10 people (28.6%). The instrument used to measure anxiety in school-age children is the Chinese version of the state anxiety scale for children with the results of the study showing that school-age children in the moderate anxiety category were 10 people (43.5), mild anxiety 8 people (34.8%) and severe anxiety 5 people (21.7%). The instrument used to measure anxiety in adolescents was the Zung self-rating anxiety scale with the results of the study showing that adolescents in the mild anxiety category were 6 people (60%) and moderate anxiety 4 people (40%).
