Abstrak

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. Family-Based Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) has been considered effective in enhancing disease management by actively involving family support. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Family-Based DSME program in improving the quality of life among individuals with T2DM in the working area of the Banjarmasin Community Health Center. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test was employed. A total of 30 respondents were selected using purposive sampling and divided into two groups: 15 participants in the intervention group and 15 in the control group. The intervention was administered over two weeks through an integrated educational program that actively engaged family members. The instrument used was the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQOL) questionnaire, and data were analyzed using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The results revealed a significant improvement in the total quality of life score in the intervention group from 2.70 to 3.35 (p = 0.001), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (p = 0.638). The post-test score difference between the two groups was also statistically significant (p = 0.001). These findings indicate that the Family-Based DSME program is effective in enhancing the quality of life for patients with T2DM. Family involvement plays a crucial role in improving treatment adherence, motivation, and patients’ psychosocial well-being. This intervention is recommended for implementation in primary healthcare settings.
